Beijing to sound sirens for air raid drill on Sept.19

BEIJING, Sept. 18 (ChinaMil) — Beijing will conduct an air raid alarm drill in its ten suburban districts and counties including Mentougou District, Fangshan District and Tongzhou District on September 19 to mark the 15th National Defense Day of China. This is the 3rd air raid alarm drill in the past decade.

The air raid alarm signals consist of three types and are easy to distinguish.

According to the regulations, urban civil air raid alarm signal shall have three types including pre-alarm signal, air raid alarm signal and all-clear signal.

In this drill, the interval between each alarm signal is three minutes. The total time of alarm is 15 minutes, three minutes for each type.

Pre-alarm signal is the warning before enemy attack. It will only sound three times. Each time lasts for 36 seconds and the stop time is 24 seconds.

Air raid alarm signal is the siren when the enemy is close to the city and the enemy is about to or has already started the attack. This alarm is relatively rapid and is of high frequency. It will sound 15 times. Each time lasts for 6 seconds and the stop time is 6 seconds.

The all-clear signal is recognizable. It is a long sound that lasts for three minutes.

Beijing’s alarm coverage rate is more than 98 percent and the device uses wireless control. The purpose of this drill is to examine the quality of air raid siren equipment and control system to ensure that the alarm device is in standby mode, according to the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Civil Air Defense.

“Air raid alarm drill aims to let the public understand and become familiar with air raid alarm signals in order to reduce casualties in wartime air defense and peacetime disaster prevention,” said Wei Xin from the Publicity Department of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Civil Defense.

Siren, wired and wireless radio, television, telephone, Internet and bells are all alarm equipment.

“During the air raid alarm drill, there’s no need to fear. We can pay attention and distinguish the various alarm signals. Please maintain normal work and life order,” reminded the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Civil Defense.
