Media freedom in the context of counter-terrorism policies in focus at Bucharest expert workshop on 7-8 October 2015

BUCHAREST / VIENNA, 1 October 2015 – The freedom of the media and the media’s responsibilities in the context of counter-terrorism policies will be the focus of a workshop organized by OSCE with the support of the Romanian Foreign Ministry for experts and practitioners from governments, civil society and the media, as well as international and regional organizations, in Bucharest on 7 and 8 October 2015.

The expert workshop aims at raising awareness and promoting the exchange information about the challenges of and opportunities in co-operation between OSCE governments, the media and civil society in countering the appeal of terrorism, while understanding their roles and interests.

The workshop will contribute to the development of general guidelines, standards and recommendations related to countering terrorism and the role of the media. It will also elaborate on options for further OSCE involvement in promoting public-private partnership initiatives with the media and civil society organizations in countering terrorism at the national and sub-regional levels.

Opening the workshop will be Daniel Ioniţă, State Secretary at Romania’s Foreign Ministry; Dunja Mijatović, OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, and Alexey Lyzhenkov, Director of the OSCE Transnational Threats Department.

The workshop is fully open to representatives of the media. The workshop will be held at the Athénée Palace Hilton Bucharest (Strada Episcopiei 1-3, Bucharest 010292) and opens at 09:30 on Wednesday, 7 October 2015 and concludes at 16:00 on Thursday, 8 October 2015.

The working languages of the workshop are English, French, Romanian and Russian.
