The adoption of a UN Security Council resolution to establish a United Nations monitoring mission in Colombia is a development that gives us hope. It is a further important step on the road towards ending the decades-long armed conflict in Colombia. The mission will also help to inspire the necessary additional trust on the part of the Colombian people in the success of the peace process.

With their agreement to disarm and their appeal to the Security Council, President Santos and the FARC have closed one of the most difficult negotiating chapters on the path towards lasting peace. They deserve our recognition and respect for this. The Federal Government, in particular the Special Envoy for the Colombian peace process Tom Koenigs, remains ready and willing to extend its commitment to the peace and security of Colombia.
