Minister Waszczykowski in Washington: NATO Summit will increase Poland’s security

After his meeting with the U.S. Secretary of State in Washington on Wednesday, the Polish Foreign Minister said that the security of Poland and that of the entire eastern flank would be increased after the NATO Summit in Warsaw this July. He added that security problems in Eastern Europe was the main topic discussed during the meeting.

Relaying to journalists his 30-minute discussion with the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Waszczykowski said that his American counterpart touched on the issue of – as he called it – Poland’s “domestic challenges”. However, Waszczykowski pointed out, this was only done in passing.

The Polish Foreign Minister said that Kerry “pointed out that Poland is under observation by the Venice Commission and the European Commission and we both agreed that Poland needs to continue working with these bodies in order to resolve these issues in a spirit of consensus. It was a marginal matter,” Waszczykowski said.

The head of Polish diplomacy said that the talk was held in a “very nice, friendly atmosphere” by the fireplace at Kerry’s office. The meeting, he said, focused in large part on security problems in Eastern Europe.

“Our concerns about European security are being met with a response by the U.S. and I hope that the NATO Summit, which will take place in Warsaw this July, will be a pleasant surprise as Poland’s security and that of the entire eastern flank will be increased,” Waszczykowski said. He added that this would be done by increasing the presence of equipment and troops, and Poland is ready “to build the appropriate infrastructure that would allow NATO soldiers to stay in Poland”.
