Put under pressure by the Coalition’s coordinated operations, Daesh has lost the initiative on the ground and is withdrawing – in both Iraq and Syria. Although it should be borne in mind that the success of these operations will take effect over the long term, the tactical situation is indicative of an improvement. Militarily, Daesh has been on the defensive for some weeks and cannot claim any major territorial gains.

While the situation in the Central African Republic remains fragile, the success of the Pope’s visit provided an occasion, coming as it has on the eve of the 2nd anniversary of the launch of the Sangaris operation, to take stock of progress so far.
Barkhane : Situation update, 3 December 2015
The Barkhane force, deployed for a month in the northern part of the Sahel-Saharan Strip (SSS), has used all its resources in an operation named Vignemale, aimed at wearing down the manoeuvring capabilities of armed terrorist groups in northern Mali and Niger. Over 1,000 soldiers, i.e. a third of the entire force, were deployed in the field. The Barkhane force employed specific operational procedures adapted to the terrain and threat in each of the two areas of operations, Northern Mali and Northern Niger.

Since 15 November 2015, the French army has stepped up its operations against ISIL in Iraq and Syria. Together with raids carried out from bases in the Persian Gulf and Jordan, the aircraft carrier battle group will soon be deployed in the western Mediterranean. The aircraft carrier battle group has a total of 38 fighter aircraft, tripling capabilities for air operations as part of the Chammal operation.
