New cooperation agreement with the EU covering the Western Balkans and Turkey
BRUSSELS, 11 APRIL 2016,Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland and the EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy & Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn, will launch a new agreement – known as the “Horizontal Facility” – on cooperation between the Council of Europe and the European Union to promote democracy, human rights and the rule of law in the Western Balkans and Turkey. The €25 million agreement will last for three years.

Securing democracy through education: Brussels conference of education ministers
BRUSSELS (EGMONT PALACE), 11-12 APRIL 2016,Education ministers and officials from 50 countries will meet to discuss a new tool for teaching democracy and democratic values, as part of the Council of Europe’s on-going work to help tackle radicalisation and promote inclusive societies. Speakers will include Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland and the EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, Tibor Navracsics, as well as high-level representatives of the Belgian authorities.

On the occasion of the Istanbul Film Festival (7-17 April), the Film Award of the Council of Europe (FACE) will be given to a film which raises public awareness and interest in human rights issues and creates better understanding of their importance.
The Eurimages Fund will also join the Festival to present the first edition of the Audentia Award for best female director. Instigated by Eurimages alongside a raft of other measures to promote greater gender equality in the European film industry, this Award intends to celebrate women who have had the courage to make that choice, by giving their work greater visibility and inspiring other women to follow in their footsteps.11 APRIL, LONDON
