A Federal Foreign Office spokesperson issued the following statement on 7 May following the announcement of the verdict against two journalists from the newspaper Cumhuriyet:

The proceedings against the two journalists is a litmus test for the independence of the judiciary and the freedom of opinion and of the press. This is why we received the news of the verdict with considerable concern.

The Federal Government has always been deeply committed to the rule of law and the freedom of opinion and of the press. We will follow further developments in this case extremely closely. It is deplorable that it was no longer possible to observe the trial after the first day of hearings.
