8 OF EUROPE’S MOST WANTED CRIMINALS CAPTURED THANKS TO GENERAL PUBLIC

Six months after the launch of the ‘Europe’s Most Wanted Fugitives’ website, a platform hosted by Europol, 14 of the fugitives wanted by EU Member States have successfully been put behind bars. In at least 8 of these arrests, the leads provided via the online platform played a direct role in locating the fugitives. Requesting the assistance of the general public has proven to provide significant added value for capturing criminals on the run.
SPAIN AND EUROPOL DISMANTLE CRIME NETWORK INVOLVED IN FIREARMS TRAFFICKING

Europol has supported a Spanish National Police – led operation which resulted in the dismantlement of an organised crime group headed by a Polish national suspected of firearms trafficking.
Numerous house searches were carried out in several locations in the municipality of Ibiza in the last couple of weeks. Simultaneously, Europol coordinated searches in some firms located in Germany and Switzerland.
AUSTRIA, HUNGARY AND EUROPOL DISMANTLE MIGRANT SMUGGLING RING

Europol’s European Migrant Smuggling Centre (EMSC) has supported the Austrian and Hungarian authorities to detect and dismantle an Austrian-based organised crime group involved in migrant smuggling.
On 21 July 2016, Europol deployed a Mobile Analysis Support Team to Austria and Hungary to support the local authorities in organising a joint action day against the network. Law enforcement officers arrested 6 individuals in Austria and one in Hungary.

EUROPOL AND LITHUANIA PREVENT PRODUCTION OF MILLIONS OF COUNTERFEIT EURO

A total of EUR 17 150 in counterfeit EUR 50 banknotes were discovered and seized after Lithuanian law enforcement authorities searched over 10 residences and vehicles belonging to a criminal network specialised in euro counterfeiting.
Moreover, the criminals had prepared paper with watermark and security thread imitations for more than EUR 3 million in counterfeit EUR 50 banknotes.
EUROPOL INTERNET REFERRAL UNIT ONE YEAR ON

Since its launch one year ago, Europol’s European Union Internet Referral Unit (EU IRU) has assessed and processed for the purpose of referral towards concerned internet service providers over 11 000 messages across some 31 online platforms in 8 languages. The content had been put out by criminals to spread violent extremist online content materials.
91.4% of the total content has been successfully removed from the platforms by the social media and online service providers.
