Defence Ministry of Russia expects from partners official response to Russian initiatives aimed at reduction of tension in the Baltic Region

According to the Chief of the Main Directorate for international military cooperation of the Russian Defence Ministry Sergei Koshelev, the Russian military department is monitoring the information appeared in the mass media concerning the Russian initiative on bilateral consultations with defence departments of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Sweden and Finland, which was announced at the session of the Russia-NATO Council in July, 2016.

Statements of the head of the Lithuanian foreign service were not ignored. He emphasized only one element of the Russian initiative on tension reduction in the Baltic Region – flights of military aviation with turned-on transponders. According to the Lithuanian Minister, it is far from sufficient for solving security problems in this region.

Sergei Koshelev stressed that the Russian Defence Ministry has a wide range of issues to be discussed: starting from cooperation with the NATO to joint reaction on common threats and challenges. Respective letter was sent to defence departments of countries mentioned above, including the Defence Ministry of Lithuania.

Sergei Koshelev noted that Russian Defence Ministry expected official reaction of foreign partners on the suggestions because conversation through the media could not allow to solve the disputes.
