Coordinator for Cyber Issues Christopher Painter traveled to New York City on December 1 to represent the United States at the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee Special Meeting on “Preventing the Exploitation of Information and Communications Technologies for Terrorist purposes, while Respecting Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.”
The meeting brought together Member States, international and regional organizations, civil society, and the private sector to discuss the challenges surrounding the use of the Internet and information and communications technologies for terrorist purposes. Coordinator Painter was a panel participant in Session I of the meeting, “The Threat and Governmental Approaches.” The special meeting was preceded by a day and a half of technical meetings where representatives from the Department of Justice and the U.S. Global Engagement Center spoke on international coordination and counter-messaging, respectively.
