Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel issued the following statement today (20 August) on Doğan Akhanlı’s case:

I am pleased that Doğan Akhanlı has been released.
It would be bad if Turkey could also have people who raise their voice against President Erdoğan put in prison at the other end of Europe.
I have the utmost trust in the Spanish judicial system and know that our friends and partners in the Spanish Government are aware of what is involved.

The Chargé d’Affaires at the German Embassy Madrid attended the hearing at the Audiencia Nacional today.
Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel discussed the matter with his Spanish counterpart by telephone yesterday evening.
