A manhunt was underway in Rockford, Illinois, after a deputy assigned to the U.S. Marshals Service was shot while serving warrants Thursday, police said.
Rockford Police Lt. Andre Brass said officers from multiple agencies were searching for Floyd Brown, 39, who had been staying at the Extended Stay America in Rockford when a team of officers attempted to serve him with several warrants.
Brass said Brown shot the deputy, who was part of a regional task force, with a rifle. The condition of the wounded officer was not immediately known, Brass said.
“The subject fled the room he was in, and the subject is at large right now,” Brass said.
Brown should be considered armed and dangerous, Brass said. Police were searching for a silver Mercury Grand Marquis, Brass said.
“We just want to end this incident peacefully and with his surrender,” he said. “We have prayers for the officer that was hit and we have prayers for the officers trying to locate the suspect.”
The incident comes three weeks after a mass shooting at the Henry Pratt Company in Aurora, 70 miles southeast of Rockford. Six people including the gunman died.
Extended Stay America has more than 600 locations across the nation. The suites, which include kitchens, are booked by the day, week or month.
Rockford is about 90 miles northwest of Chicago, close to the Wisconsin border.
