This Week in Iran Policy, July 26-August 2

“I look forward to the chance to speak to the Iranian people in that same way [as Zarif] but truthfully.”

 – Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, with David Rubenstein, President of the Economic Club of Washington, DC, July 29

THE U.S. DESIGNATES IRANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER MOHAMMAD JAVAD ZARIF

“Recently, President @realDonaldTrump sanctioned Iran’s Supreme Leader, who enriched himself at the expense of the Iranian people. Today, the U.S. designated his chief apologist @JZarif. He’s just as complicit in the regime’s outlaw behavior as the rest of @khamenei_ir’s mafia.”

– Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Twitter, July 31

• On July 31, the United States designated Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif pursuant to Executive Order 13876 for acting or purporting to act for or on behalf of the Supreme Leader of Iran.
• This action is another step toward denying Iran’s leadership the financial resources to enable terror and oppress the Iranian people.

SECRETARY POMPEO RENEWS NUCLEAR RESTRICTIONS ON IRAN

• On July 31, Secretary Pompeo has continued restrictions on the Iranian regime’s nuclear program for an additional 90 days. The action today maintains existing restrictions that help preserve oversight of Iran’s civil nuclear program, reduce proliferation risks, constrain Iran’s ability to shorten its “breakout time” to a nuclear weapon, and prevent the regime from reconstituting sites for proliferation-sensitive purposes.
