Carpathian Pumas Detachment soldiers in Mali Operating Theatre
decorated with the UN medal
On Tuesday, February 25th, at the base of Camp Castor, Gao, the UN medal ceremony was held for the servicemen of the Carpathian Pumas detachment participating in the UN Integrated Multidimensional Stabilisation Mission in the Republic of Mali – MINUSMA.
The Romanian military meets all eligibility conditions as members of the MINUSMA mission and have been rewarded with the UN medal for their professionalism and involvement in carrying out missions under the aegis of the United Nations in the nearly five months since they were in the Mali theatre of operations.
The ceremony took place in the presence of the Special Representative of the UN Secretariat-General, Mahamat Saleh Annadif, and the delegation of the Ministry of National Defence, headed by the commander of the Joint Forces Command, Major General Ioniţă Dorin.
The symbolism of medals and their ribbon is closely linked to the UN, but also to the state of Mali. The blue on the edges symbolizes the representative color of the United Nations. The colors of the flag of Mali are relentless, followed by the dark blue color in the center that symbolizes the color of Niger, the only river that runs through the state of northwestern Africa. At the same time, the pamphlet is present the light yellow color, symbolizing the Sahel area (the form of transition relief between the savannah and the desert), specific to North Africa.
