Dramatic situation for hundreds of Romanians in Italy, who worked in tourism and, in the crisis created by coronavirus, were fired overnight.
Through the employment contract they had their accommodation secured, but because the hotels were closed, the employers asked them to clear the rooms. They can’t even return home, as the borders are closed.
In the Trento region there are over 70 maramuresans from Borşa. People worked as seasonal and were under contract until March 31. But since the resorts are deserted, hotels closed their doors and the employees saw each other in the street.
Woman: “Our boss called and said, “I’m sorry, girls, today is the last day of work. When can you clear the house?” and I said we can’t clear the house until we have the table.”
Woman: “The contract ended faster, because it closed because of the virus, so it’s not our fault, we also worked yesterday. Now that’s it, it’s over.”
The mayor of Borşa says he would like to send two coaches to bring people home. He has already asked for the foreign ministry’s support to make sure the cars will not be stopped at the border. In the hope that they will be able to leave, people are waiting for news of their luggage packed.
Woman: “Now I want to go back to the country to my little girl. I left the little girl in the care of a cousin of mine, which I pay for.”
Some of them can’t afford to stay, they say they don’t have the money to pay rent in Italy until the crisis passes. They only worked for three months and sent the money they earned to families in the country.
Woman: “We have come to work, the money is in the country all, of course, that we are Romanians.”
But the journey of Romanians leaving Italy is extremely difficult.
Austria allows the country to transit only to those who have a medical certificate, which shows that they are not ill or if they can demonstrate that they will not stop on its territory.
Slovenia, likewise, only allows access to those with a medical certificate.
However, Romanians will not be able to pass through Hungary, which has closed its borders for foreigners coming from the Peninsula.
