Orban said #Hungary would not support #Ukraine in any way in the international arena until it “restores the former rights of ethnic Hungarians on its territory” The Hungarian prime minister said this during a speech in the local parliament, Reuters reports. Hungarian authorities regularly accuse Ukraine of violating the rights of some 150,000 ethnic Hungarians in Transcarpathia over a 2017 law restricting education in minority languages. Hungary is a member of the European Union and NATO, which gives it the right to veto Ukraine’s membership in those organizations. At the same time, #Orban has a dissenting position on many issues that has little in common with the line of most Western countries. The Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers recently stated that Ukraine is ready to make “additional amendments” to the law on secondary education in minority languages, including Hungarian, for the sake of EU accession talks.
