FM Péter Szijjártó announced that Hungary and Slovakia have initiated a consultation process with the EU against Ukraine for halting oil supplies. Speaking in Brussels, he stressed that the Ukrainian decision jeopardizes energy security for both countries, given that they rely heavily on Russian oil via the Druzhba pipeline.
Minister Szijjártó highlighted that the halt in Lukoil shipments, which provide a significant portion of Hungarian and Slovakian oil imports, threatens the energy supply. Despite temporary solutions, long-term stability cannot be ensured without resolving this issue. He noted, “This decision is unacceptable and incomprehensible from a country aspiring to join the EU.”
The minister mentioned that this move violates the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, which prohibits disruption of energy transit. Hungary and Slovakia have jointly requested the European Commission to initiate a consultation process. If unresolved, the issue may escalate to arbitration, potentially impacting EU-Ukraine agreements.
