The first day of October is marked by an event with a significant weight for the development of physics in the Republic of Moldova, integration into the European and international scientific space. On October 1-4, 2024, in Chisinau, under the auspices of the State University of Moldova, the Institute of Applied Physics and the Public Association “Materials Science and Engineering”, the International Scientific Conference “Materials Science and Condensed Matter Physics” (MSCMP-2024), which has already reached its tenth edition, is holding its work.
The plenary session of the Conference took place in the Regina Maria Hall of the State University of Moldova, being opened and moderated by Acad. Leonid Culiuc, President of the MSCMP-2024 Conference, who in his welcome message also made a brief retrospective of the evolution of the Institute of Applied Physics during the six decades of activity. The creation of the Institute, initiated by the first director, academician Boris Lazarenko, was supported and promoted by the professionalism of scientific collaborators and engineers, who made significant contributions to the development of research in the fields of condensed matter physics, materials science, electrophysics and electrotechnologies.
With appreciation and congratulations to the organizers, to the participants of the 10th edition of the international scientific conference, came Mrs. Liliana Nicolaescu-Onofrei, Chair of the Parliamentary Commission “Culture, Education, Research, Youth, Sport and Media”, who conveyed the greetings of the participants to the event on behalf of Mr. Igor Grosu, Speaker of the Parliament, awarding the Institute of Applied Physics the Diploma of Honor on behalf of the Parliament, highlighting the efforts of the institution and the entire team of researchers in the development of basic sciences. Dr. Galina Rusu, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Education and Research, underlined the role and importance of such scientific events with a special impact on the development of science, the establishment of new partnerships and efficient collaboration.
This year’s edition takes place in a festive context, the Institute of Applied Physics celebrating 60 years since its foundation as a research institute within the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. In this context, Acad. Ion Tighineanu, President of the Academy of Sciences, welcomed the impressive presence of researchers from different countries, including the participation of the honorary member of the Academy of Sciences Vladimir Fomin. In order to mark 60 years of activity of the IFA, the ASM Presidium decided to award the “Excellence in Research” Plaque, as a sign of high gratitude for valuable scientific achievements, the promotion of research on an international scale, as well as the training of highly qualified staff. The President of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova handed over the academic distinction to the director of IFA, Dr. Olga Şikimaka.
Starting with 2022, the Institute of Applied Physics has become a subdivision of the State University of Moldova and in this context, Vice-Rector Sergiu Corlat stressed in his speech the importance of research institutes and cooperation with the university environment, USM being honored to host such a large-scale scientific event.
According to the organizers, the holding of the MSCMP-2024 Conference is important for the development of physical, physico-chemical sciences, materials engineering in the Republic of Moldova, for establishing new scientific cooperation with partners from the EU, as well as from other countries, the initiation of joint projects within the European research and development programs (Horizon Europe), but also for promoting the science and image of the Republic of Moldova internationally. The complex program of the conference includes over 200 participants, including more than 70 physicists from Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czech Republic, Croatia, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Lithuania, Great Britain, Morocco, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, USA, Turkey, Ukraine, Hungary.
