ASM: Research, closer to young people lectures and interactive visits to research laboratories for dozens of pupils

AcasăThe Academy of Sciences of Moldova and the Academy of Young People of Moldova continue the campaign to promote science among schoolchildren and students. On March 19, the ‘Vasile Vasilache’ Theoretical High School was the institution that hosted a lecture given this time by Larisa Mocan, PhD in chemical sciences, senior scientific researcher at the Laboratory of Ecological Chemistry and Modern Chemical Technologies at the State University of Moldova.

The researcher spoke to the young people about modern wastewater treatment methods and came up with concrete examples of the impact that neglecting these processes can have on the environment. It also managed to raise awareness among young people with information on the circular economy, explaining to them about the need to be as careful as possible about their own consumption and to learn more about recycling and reuse processes.

Subsequently, on March 26, in the Laboratory of Ecological Chemistry and Modern Chemical Technologies at USM, the students were captivated by the demonstration process of textile wastewater treatment methods, coordinated by the doctor of chemical sciences Larisa Mocan. Thus, around 30 students had the opportunity to get to know in practice how a wastewater treatment process takes place.

The students were delighted with the organized activities, mentioning in the feedback questionnaires that they found it extremely interesting, they enjoyed the interaction with the researchers and this experience will help them to better orient themselves towards the field of activity they would like to embrace after graduating from high school.

We remind that the first institutions that hosted such educational events were the “Gaudeamus” Theoretical High School and the “Da Vinci” High School in Chisinau. They benefited from a visit to the Museum of Computing Technology, which is located inside the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science, where they also participated in the Pi Bune Day, the third edition, dedicated to the fascinating mysteries of the π issue.

The campaign to promote science among pupils and students is supported by UNESCO and will take place throughout 2025, including public lectures, organized visits to research laboratories and the selection of the best students for participation in the Summer School “The Path to Scientific Discoveries”, which will take place at ASM on June 23-27, 2025.
