
The Academy of Sciences of Moldova has expanded its international academic community by electing new honorary members, prestigious personalities of the scientific world, whose merits and outstanding contributions strengthen institutional partnerships and open new perspectives for interdisciplinary collaborations. On April 15, 2025, at the General Assembly of the members of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, new honorary members of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova were elected.
The candidacies of internationally renowned scientists were supported, Acad. Nicolae Victor ZAMFIR, vice–president of the Romanian Academy, recognized for his contributions in the field of nuclear physics and for his active role in the development of bilateral scientific relations between Romania and the Republic of Moldova. Together with him, Prof. Jūras BANYS, President of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, was elected an honorary member for promoting excellence in research and supporting the strengthening of European academic collaboration networks. Also, Professor Xiao Yu YANG, from the Joint International Collaboration Laboratory for Advanced Technology of Synthesis and Material Processing of the Ministry of Education of China, was chosen as a sign of appreciation for his innovative work in the field of advanced materials and openness to international scientific cooperation.
The list of honorary members is completed by Professor Mircea BEURAN, president of the Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences, an emblematic personality of surgery and promoter of educational and clinical partnerships between the specialized institutions in the two countries. Professor Cristian LUPAȘCU, from the “Grigore T. Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Iași, was recognized for his valuable contributions in the field of surgery and training of young generations of doctors, his collaborations with medical institutions in the Republic of Moldova being constant and efficient.
A special moment is the election, as honorary member, of Professor Richard John ROBERTS, a world–class expert in molecular biology and winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1993. His scientific work, carried out at New England Biolabs in the USA, revolutionized the understanding of genetic mechanisms and profoundly influenced the development of modern biotechnologies.
The appreciation and honor granted by the academic community of the Republic of Moldova reflects the recognition of an exceptional career and a lasting contribution to the progress of science.
