On May 5, 2025, the president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, academician Ion Tighineanu, gave an engaging public lecture in front of over 150 students and teachers from the “Mihai Eminescu“ Theoretical High School in Drochia. The event, part of the campaign to promote science in schools, was marked by a warm welcome, the academician being welcomed with the traditional bread and salt and a poetry recital by the most talented students in the high school.
During the lecture, the ASM president spoke about the accelerated pace of development of modern technologies, underlining the profound impact of nanotechnologies on the major transformations of the last decades. Acad. Tighineanu captured the audience‘s attention, explaining how these innovations have revolutionized various fields and opened up new opportunities for the future.
The accelerated development of nanotechnologies at global level, starting with 2000–2001, determined Acad. Ion Tighineanu to create a high–performance research center in the field of nanotechnology at the Technical University of Moldova, where during the last 25 years many dozens of young people have had the opportunity to carry out research internships and doctoral theses, thus contributing to the development of the field of nanotechnologies.
Some of the most remarkable achievements were presented during the lecture, mentioning “Surface Charge Lithograph”, micro-nano-motors made of nanotubes, Aerogalnite – the first artificial material that denotes dual hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties, i.e. simultaneously attracts and repels water, etc.
Addressing the students, the academician highlighted the beauty and importance of research work. “Research is an exciting activity. Some choose to follow it for life, others for shorter periods, but in any case, it contributes enormously to the multilateral development of the personality,” said the ASM president. With these words, he encouraged young people to be curious and to get involved in research activities, emphasizing its role in the formation of critical and innovative thinking, opening up professional opportunities at international level. In discussions with the teachers, the president of the Academy of Sciences urged them to identify talented students and motivate them to discover the universe of knowledge, offering them all the necessary support, including multidisciplinary lectures and collaboration with research institutions.
The event in Drochia represents an important step in the mission of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova to inspire the new generation to discover and appreciate science, strengthening the connection between the academic environment and young people eager for knowledge.
