On May 8, 2025, the Academy of Sciences of Moldova and the Romanian Academy organized the 2nd edition of the academic conference “Strengthening the Romanian Scientific Space in the European Context,” dedicated to Europe Day. The event brought together full members, corresponding members, and appointed members of the science sections, researchers, and cultural figures.
At the opening of the event, the president of the Romanian Academy, acad. Ioan-Aurel Pop, spoke about the importance of integration into the European Union while preserving authentic Romanian values and traditions. He emphasized the need for this conference to resonate not only in Romania and the Republic of Moldova but also in other European academies.
In his speech, acad. Ioan-Aurel Pop clarified Romania’s belonging to Europe, emphasizing that “Romanians have been members of Europe for over a thousand years.” The President of the Romanian Academy detailed the dual cultural identity of Romanians, marked by Western and Eastern influences. On one hand, the Roman origin, the Neolatin language, the name “Romanian” (derived from the Latin romanus), and the Latin rite Christianity place Romania in the Western sphere. “Through these characteristics, we are Westerners,” he stated. On the other hand, the church organization based on the Byzantine model, the use of the Cyrillic alphabet and the Slavic ecclesiastical language until the mid-19th century, as well as the Balkan influences, have anchored Romania in the civilization of Eastern Europe. Citing Pope John Paul II, acad. Ioan-Aurel Pop described Romania as a participant in “both lungs of Europe,” positioning it as a bridge between East and West.
In his speech, Academician Ion Tighineanu invoked the example of the Czech Republic, where the country’s innovation strategy is focused on knowledge-based production, supported by constant investments in research and a network of 54 scientific institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences. “The lack of advisory councils made up of elite researchers at the top of power leads to arbitrary political decisions,” mentioned the president of the ASM, recalling the delay in the official recognition of the name of the Romanian language in the Republic of Moldova. Although the linguists of the Academy have firmly maintained the correctness of the name ‘Romanian language’ since 1994, the political class has ignored these evidences for decades. Only in 2023 did the current Parliament return to normality, putting an end to an artificial controversy.
In the context of the European path of the Republic of Moldova, the president of the National Academy of Sciences, academician Ion Tighineanu, emphasized the importance of deepening collaboration with Romania and the European Union. A key moment mentioned was the launch, in November 2023, together with five Academies from Romania, of the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development, an initiative that will culminate in the fall with a conference dedicated to the impact of science and artificial intelligence on societal development.Additionally, the organization of the 3rd edition of the Summer School “The Path to Scientific Discoveries” was announced, in collaboration with the Academy of Young Scientists from Moldova and the Romanian Academy, aimed at encouraging scientific careers among students and pupils.
