The Romanian medical elite celebrated 90 years of existence in a festive moment of high academic standing.

At the opening of the event, the president of the Academy of Medical Sciences recalled the history and contribution of

the institution to society.

“On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Academy of Medical Sciences, we have the great honor of inviting you to the events organized for this occasion. Your presence honors us and brings us joy as well. The Academy of Medical Sciences is an academic institution with tradition, having a history that places it among the first four medical academies founded in Europe, with its members representing the medical elite of Romania. It was established in 1935, by royal decree, under the name ‘Academy of Medicine’, as a result of the efforts of two great personalities of interwar Romanian medicine, Prof. univ. Dr. Daniel Danielopolu and Prof. univ. Dr. Constantin Angelescu. The idea of establishing a Medical Academy dates back to 1927, when Prof. univ. Dr. Daniel Danielopolu persistently advocated for 8 years the necessity of creating such an essential institution for Romanian medicine.

The first president of the Academy of Medicine was Prof. university Dr. Constantin Angelescu.

Dissolved in 1948 by the communist regime, the Academy was reborn in 1969 under its current name, the Academy of Medical Sciences. Starting in 1990, the Academy was reorganized, prioritizing biomedical and pharmaceutical research, the development of health policies in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, and cooperation with other scientific research units in the country and abroad. In 2004, Law no. 264 on the organization and functioning of the Academy of Medical Sciences was enacted, which institutionally restored the Academy to what was stipulated by the law of April 17, 1935, initiated by Professor Dr. Daniel Danielopolu.

The Academy has counted among its members prestigious personalities of human and veterinary medicine, of medical and pharmaceutical research, professors, researchers, founders of medical schools such as professors: Gheorghe Marinescu, Constantin Levaditi, Emil Racoviță, Nicolae Ionescu – Șișești, Iacob Iacobovici, Ion Bălăcescu, Mihai Ciucă, Alexandru Ciucă, Constantin Ionescu Mihăești, Constantin Bacaloglu, Grigore Antipa, Dimitrie Gerota, Constantin I. Parhon, but also many others.

Through its history, the Academy of Medical Sciences represents a benchmark in the field of Romanian medical and pharmaceutical research. ”
