On June 23, 2025, Professor James ROTHMAN, Nobel Prize winner in medicine, will open the summer school “The Path to Scientific Discoveries,” organized by the Academy of Sciences of Moldova in collaboration with the Romanian Academy and the Academy of Young Scientists of the Republic of Moldova. The renowned American scientist will deliver a lecture titled “A Life in Science,” in which he will describe his career trajectory, from his early steps in scientific research to groundbreaking discoveries.
Professor James Rothman is a remarkable biologist and biochemist, known for his contributions to the field of cell biology and cellular transport. He is a professor at Yale University, USA, and won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2013, together with professors Randy W. Schekman and Thomas C. Südhof, for discoveries related to the mechanisms of cellular transport and exocytosis of protein factories in cells. Prof. Rothman has studied how vesicles transport proteins and other molecules within cells, significantly contributing to the understanding of cellular functioning.
James E. Rothman was born on May 3, 1950, in New York, United States of America. He studied biology at Columbia University, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree. Afterwards, he continued his studies at Harvard University, where he earned his PhD in biochemistry. Throughout his career, he was a professor at Yale University, leading the cell biology laboratory.
