Between June 23-27, 2025, the Academy of Sciences of Moldova hosted the Summer School “Path to Scientific Discoveries”, an event that provided the opportunity for 47 students from educational institutions in the Republic of Moldova to interact with renowned scientists, professors, and researchers. The event, held in the Azure Hall and online, offered participants a unique platform to explore the latest discoveries and challenges in various fields, from medicine and nanotechnology to law and sustainable agriculture.
The opening ceremony, which took place on June 23, was marked by the speech of acad. Ion TIGHINEANU, President of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, who emphasized the importance of fundamental research and education through science.According to the agenda, on the first day of the event, Prof. James ROTHMAN, Nobel Laureate in Medicine, Yale University, USA, gave a lecture on the importance of fundamental research. Prof. Klaus MAINZER, President of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, Salzburg, Austria, addressed the challenges of artificial intelligence in science and health, while acad. Aurelian GULEA presented innovative perspectives in cancer treatment.
On the second day of the Summer School, acad. Eva GUDUMAC, vice president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, elucidated the risk factors in adolescent health, while prof. Irina-Iuliana COSTACHE-ENACHE, from the Sf. Spiridon Emergency Clinical Hospital in Iași, discussed cardiovascular risk factors.On the same day, young people were able to attend a lecture by prof. Ioannis LIRITZIS, from the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, who presented aspects regarding the penetration of STEM in the fields of arts and cultural heritage. The program continued with a communication from prof. Andrei ROTARU, from Babeș-Bolyai University, Romania, who talked about the model of porous environment applied to society.
Prof. Nicolae CHELE from USMF ‘Nicolae Testemițanu’ discussed oro-maxillofacial surgery, while Dr. Iuliana POPESCU from the Kentucky Academy of Sciences (Education & Engagement Committee), Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center, USA, explored the causes of aging and the possibility of rejuvenation. The day concluded with a lecture delivered by Prof. Xiao-Yu YANG from Wuhan University of Technology, China, who analyzed the balance between foundational education and frontier research.On the third day, June 25, 2025, students were captivated by the presentation of Prof. Viorel NACU from USMF ‘Nicolae Testemițanu’, who spoke about new strategies for artificial tissues and organs. Subsequently, MC Liliana CEPOI gave a lecture on the biotechnology of tomorrow.
Stephanie Boyce FKC and Robert Williams, former president of The Law Society of England and Wales , News247WorldPress, discussed the access of the population to justice and legal education. Prof. Liviu-Bogdan CIUCĂ, president of the Academy of Legal Sciences of Romania, addressed the survival of justice in the contemporary world. Dr. Marian ENACHE, president of the Constitutional Court of Romania, spoke about law as order and system.
On the penultimate day of the Summer School “Path to Scientific Discoveries”, acad. Marius ANDRUH, Vice President of the Romanian Academy, spoke to the students about the beauty of chemistry, while m.c. Viorel BOSTAN, rector of the Technical University of Moldova, discussed the development of the first satellite of the Republic of Moldova.Next, Prof. Kornelius NIELSCH from the Leibniz Institute of Solid State and Materials Research, IFW-Dresden, Germany, talked about atomic layer deposition with precision. M.c. Liliana GROPPA from USMF “Nicolae Testemițanu” addressed infections at the onset of rheumatic diseases, while Prof. Juras BANYS from the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences presented advanced materials for the future.
The last day of the Summer School began with a lecture given by Acad. Alexandru STRATAN, the Rector of the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova, who spoke to the students about economic thinking and leadership. Prof. Violeta DINESCU from the European Academy of Sciences and Arts presented the process of writing a children’s book, while Acad. Ion TIGHINEANU returned with a lecture on the impact of nanotechnology on the world.Prof. Rattan LAL, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate from Ohio State University, USA, along with m.c. Boris BOINCEAN from the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, discussed regenerative agriculture and the role of soil in sustainability.
In addition to lectures, participants benefited from visits to the research laboratories of USMF ‘Nicolae Testemițanu’ and the Technical University of Moldova, which facilitated the development of a practical vision on scientific research. The event concluded on June 27 with the certificate awards ceremony, marking the success of a week full of inspiration and knowledge.
Young people who participated in the activities held at the Academy of Sciences of Moldova say that the Summer School “The Path to Scientific Discoveries” exceeded their expectations. Some managed to clearly define their field of study after graduating from high school, while others realized that they are passionate about research and want to develop their skills in this regard. Overall, participants expressed their delight at the way the lectures were conducted, mentioning the accessible language, unique methods of capturing attention, and the openness of the researchers. The students had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss with scientists.The Summer School “The Path to Scientific Discoveries”, now in its 3rd edition, has repeatedly demonstrated the commitment of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova to promote excellence in research and education, bringing together brilliant minds from various fields to inspire the next generation of scientists.
