On July 30, 2025, the Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to the Republic of Azerbaijan, Alexandr Esaulenco, participated, at the invitation of the Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking of the Republic of Azerbaijan and its director, Mr. Vugar Salimov, in an event for the planting of indigenous grape varieties from the Republic of Moldova, organized in the locality of Mədrəsə, Şamahî district, on the experimental ground of the laboratory of the Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

A hectare of planting material of vine-vines has been planted, including the indigenous Moldova and Viorica varieties, along with nine other varieties originating from the Republic of Moldova, among them Floricica, Black Girl, Legend, Plăvaie and others.
This event creates solid premises to strengthen cooperation between the profile institutions in the Republic of Moldova and the Republic of Azerbaijan, opening up new opportunities for technical exchanges, joint experimental projects and utilization of the Moldovan wine-wine experience in the region.
The indigenous varieties of the Republic of Moldova are noted by their excellent agricultural yield – for example, the Moldova variety has demonstrated under the climatic conditions of Azerbaijan a constant harvest of 35-40 tons/hectare. These performances are complemented by frost resistance, humidity tolerance, and very good storage and transport capacity, making them suitable for both consumption and winemaking.
Keeping these qualities in mind, Moldovan varieties could also be successfully tested in other regions of Azerbaijan with wine-growing tradition, including in the Karabakh region, which is distinguished by history and culture in vine cultivation and wine production.
The Embassy of the Republic of Moldova will continue to promote dialogue and cooperation in the field of wine-growing and winemaking, contributing to the development of bridges between specialty institutions in both countries.
We would like to express a special gratitude to the Moldovan side, especially Mr. Gheorghe Gaberi, a local entrepreneur passionate about viticulture, who actively contributes to the cultivation, conservation and promotion of indigenous vine varieties. The planting material generously offered by him played an essential role in the realization of this project with an experimental and symbolic character.
The agricultural sphere, especially viticulture, offers a fertile ground for the development of the bilateral relations between the Republic of Moldova and the Republic of Azerbaijan, and such initiatives represent concrete steps in the direction of deepening cooperation between the two countries.
