On October 10, 2025, starting at 2:00 PM, a unique and inspirational meeting will take place in the Azure Hall of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova with Prof. James Rothman, Nobel Prize Laureate in Medicine, and Prof. Joy Hirsch from Yale University in the United States of America.James Rothman is an expert in biochemistry and molecular biology, known for his contributions to the field of cellular transport and mechanisms of cellular secretion. Prof. Rothman’s research has had a profound impact on the understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of cell functioning, especially regarding transport and cellular secretion, being essential for deciphering how cells communicate and regulate internal processes.
By identifying and characterizing the SNARE protein, scientist Rothman elucidated how vesicles fuse with cellular membranes, a crucial process for secretion, thus paving the way for new perspectives in understanding neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, and cancer, where these mechanisms are disrupted. His contributions revolutionized molecular biology, providing advanced technologies and methods for studying cellular transport and significantly influencing biomedical research, thus having a lasting impact in the field of health and medical treatments, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2013, together with Randy W. Schekman and Thomas C. Südhof.
During the event, Prof. James Rothman will be honored with the Dimitrie Cantemir Medal of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova for his fruitful collaboration with scientific researchers in the Republic of Moldova and his contribution to the successful realization of the summer school “The Path to Scientific Discoveries.” It is worth mentioning that on October 9th, Prof. Rothman will present a plenary report titled “The biophysical basis of rapid information transmission in the brain” at the International Conference on Nanotechnology and Biomedical Engineering.https://icnbme.sibm.md/
Next will be the public lecture “The New Neuroscience of Two: Understanding Human Social Interactions in the Natural Everyday World”, delivered by Prof. Joy Hirsch, an internationally renowned expert in the field of neuroscience. The summary of Prof. Hirsch’s lecture can be consulted https://asm.md/sites/default/files/2025-08/Moldovia_abstract_Oct%2010jh.pdf
The event is a unique opportunity for the academic community in Moldova to interact face-to-face with renowned researchers and learn how passion and determination can change the world. Students, pupils, and young researchers who wish to participate in this memorable scientific event are encouraged to register at the following link: https://forms.gle/dH5mLLWobAYXWqoP9
