In the 20th century, science radically changed the world: it revolutionized medicine, brought new sources of energy and light, created technologies that transformed human life, and opened new horizons for society. The accumulated experience unequivocally confirms that the progress of a nation and of humanity as a whole is determined by the progress of science.
Today, in the 21st century, humanity faces existential and complex challenges: health crises, the need for clean and sustainable technologies, food, ecological, and energy security, maintaining peace, and global balance. Decisions are made by politicians, but real solutions to these problems are expected from scientists.
In this context, we, the members of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, together with Nobel Prize Laureates – Prof. Hiroshi Amano and Prof. James E. Rothman, call on society and the government of the Republic of Moldova to:
consider and recognize science and education as national strategic priorities;
provide consistent and tangible support, through coherent policies and adequate funding, to researchers and scientific institutions;
encourage young people to follow the path of knowledge and innovation;
promote partnerships between science, the economy, and culture for sustainable development.
Science is not only for scientists, but for the entire society and for future generations. Only through investments in knowledge can we build a sustainable, safe, and prosperous future.
Signed,On behalf of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova Acad. Ion TIGHINEANU, President
Prof. Hiroshi AMANO, honorary member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova
Prof. James E. ROTHMAN, scholar with Bessarabian ancestral roots
