The Academy of Sciences of Moldova, Present at the Bicentennial Celebrations of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences

President Acad. Ion TIGHINEANU conducted a working visit to Budapest, Hungary, from November 3 to 5, 2025. The visit marked participation in the celebrations dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the founding of the prestigious Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA).

The major event also benefited from the presence of the diplomatic mission of the Republic of Moldova in Hungary, represented by His Excellency Mr. Ambassador Mihail BARBULAT, and by the Second Secretary of the Embassy of Moldova in Budapest, Ms. Arina COLUN, highlighting the strategic importance of academic and diplomatic collaboration.

A special moment of the visit was the awarding ceremony of the “Dimitrie Cantemir” Medal of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. The President of ASM, Acad. Ion Tighineanu, presented this honorary distinction to the President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Acad. Tamás FREUND. The medal was awarded in recognition of Acad. FREUND’s exceptional scientific merits in the field of neuroscience, as well as for his significant contribution to promoting and strengthening collaboration between researchers from Hungary and the Republic of Moldova.

President Tamás FREUND was, moreover, a central figure at the event, delivering the inaugural speech at the main conference of the bicentennial, entitled “Past, Present and Future of Learned Societies: The changing role of Academies in the 21st century,” held on November 4 2025

The program of the festivities, which included a series of conferences and working sessions, addressed essential topics such as the role of academies in the 21st century, integrity in scientific advising (within the SAPEA workshop, co-organized by ALLEA and MTA), and efforts to build a more cohesive European Research Area (through the high-level dialogue “From Barriers to Bridges: Towards a More Cohesive European Research Area”). The participation of ASM in these discussions highlights the Republic of Moldova’s commitment to scientific excellence and active integration into European academic networks.This visit reconfirms the strong ties between the scientific communities of the two countries and opens new perspectives for future academic partnerships, essential for regional and European scientific progress.
