
Prof. Randy Schekman from the University of California, Berkeley (USA), a scientist with Bessarabian roots, Nobel Prize laureate in Medicine, honorary member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, and Doctor Honoris Causa of the Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, will participate in the ceremonial session dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the founding of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, which will take place on June 12, 2026.
Randy Wayne Schekman was born on December 30, 1948. He received an excellent education, pursued advanced studies, including doctoral studies, and later devoted himself to scientific research. In 1999, he was elected president of the American Society for Cell Biology; he is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Since 2011, he has been the editor-in-chief of the journal eLife.
The defining moment of Professor Randy Schekman’s career came in 2013, when, together with Thomas C. Südhof and James E. Rothman, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for the discovery of mechanisms that regulate vesicular traffic – an essential transport system in living cells. On June 9, 2021, during “Science Week,” Prof. Randy Schekman gave an online public lecture titled “Research on Protein Secretion and Collaboration with George Palade.”
