Prof. Sir Peter Gluckman, President of the International Science Council (ISC), will undertake a working visit to the Republic of Moldova from April 15–17, 2026, at the invitation of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. He will be accompanied by Dr. Salvatore Aricò, Chief Executive Officer of the International Science Council.
The visit takes place in the context of active cooperation between the Academy of Sciences of Moldova and the International Science Council and reflects the shared commitment to promoting science as a global public good, strengthening international scientific cooperation, and supporting mission-oriented science capable of addressing the major challenges of contemporary society.
Born on February 8, 1949, in Auckland, New Zealand, Prof. Sir Peter Gluckman is a leading figure in world science, with outstanding contributions in the fields of biology and perinatal physiology, pediatric endocrinology, and human development science. He is also internationally recognized for his essential role in developing government scientific advisory and scientific diplomacy.
From 2009 to 2018, Prof. Gluckman served as Chief Science Advisor to the Prime Minister of New Zealand, and later as the Special Envoy for Science at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He currently chairs the International Science Council, is Director of the “Informed Futures” Centre, and a member of the Global Commission on Scientific Missions for Sustainability. He is a member of the United States National Academy of Medicine and the UK’s Academy of Medical Sciences.
During their visit to Chișinău, Prof. Sir Peter Gluckman and Dr. Salvatore Aricò will give public lectures, meet with members of the scientific community and policymakers, focusing on the role of science in sustainable development, strengthening the interface between science and public policy, and increasing societal resilience through knowledge and international cooperation. For his outstanding contributions to promoting international scientific cooperation and for his ongoing support of the academic community in the Republic of Moldova, Prof. Sir Peter Gluckman is awarded the “Dimitrie Cantemir” Medal, which will be presented to him during this working visit.
The visit of the President of the International Scientific Council represents a special event for the scientific community in the Republic of Moldova and reconfirms the strategic role of science in strengthening international dialogue, promoting the values of knowledge, and building a sustainable future based on truth, responsibility, and cooperation.
