Elon Musk confirms xAI used OpenAI’s models to train GrokIn a sworn deposition related to his ongoing federal lawsuit against OpenAI, Elon Musk admitted that xAI did use OpenAI’s models, at least in part, to help train and improve its own systems — including Grok.Musk described the practice as “pretty standard in the industry,” noting that virtually all AI companies engage in what is known as model distillation — a technique where a smaller, more efficient model learns to replicate the capabilities of a larger, more powerful one.

When asked directly whether xAI had distilled OpenAI’s technology, Musk answered “partially,” while emphasizing that this is common across the sector. The revelation comes amid a highly public and contentious legal battle. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI before leaving the company, has accused it of abandoning its original non-profit mission.

Yet his latest admission highlights an ironic reality in today’s AI race: even fierce rivals sometimes rely on each other’s technology to move faster. This disclosure could spark fresh debates about intellectual property, fair competition, and just how “independent” many of the new AI models actually are.
