A Hungarian fugitive convicted of serious sexual offences against a minor has been arrested in Spain after members of the public provided information through the EU Most Wanted website. The man is currently awaiting extradition to Hungary.

The 37-year-old man was arrested in Tenerife on 7 May, three days after his profile was published on the platform. He had been sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment by the Budapest Metropolitan Court and was wanted by the Hungarian authorities.

The EU Most Wanted platform is an initiative supported by Europol and the European Network of Fugitive Active Search Teams (ENFAST). It plays an important role in helping authorities trace fugitives involved in serious and organised crime across borders.

One of the anonymous tips submitted through the website provided the location in Spain where the fugitive was believed to be hiding. The information was rapidly verified and acted upon through cooperation between the Hungarian FAST team, ENFAST contact points and the Spanish Police.

This case highlights the operational value of the EU Most Wanted platform, which enables law enforcement authorities across Europe to publish profiles of high-priority fugitives and receive information directly from the public.

Members of the public are encouraged to visit the EU Most Wanted website and review the profiles currently published. Even small pieces of information can help investigators locate dangerous offenders and bring them to justice
