The Academy of Sciences of Moldova approved, during the General Assembly held on May 12, 2026, the Report on the State of Science in the Republic of Moldova for the year 2025 and the Report on the institution’s activity during the same period.

The Report on the State of Science was presented by the President of the Academy, acad. Ion TIGHINEANU, during the 19th Session of the General Assembly. Prepared in accordance with the provisions of the Code on Science and Innovation and the ASM Statute, the document provides a comprehensive analysis of the situation in the fields of research and innovation, highlights the main systemic issues, and formulates recommendations for the sustainable development of the sector.

The report highlights the existence of major structural difficulties, including the chronic underfunding of science, salary discrepancies compared to other fields, outdated research infrastructure, as well as the decreasing attractiveness of a scientific career for young people — factors that affect the development and competitiveness of the national research system.

The report on ASM’s activity in 2025 was presented by the Academy’s General Scientific Secretary, Corresponding Member Liliana CONDRATICOVA. The document reflects the institution’s achievements in the reference year, the main challenges, and strategic development directions, consolidating the Academy’s role as a strategic consultant to the Government and a promoter of excellence in research.

Throughout 2025, the Academy of Sciences of Moldova was involved in evaluating hundreds of scientific projects, organizing conferences, public lectures, and academic events, as well as promoting research results in the public sphere. At the same time, the institution continued the process of integrating national research into the European Research Area, including through participation in international projects and initiatives promoted by UNESCO.

The report on the state of science highlights valuable results achieved by the academic community in numerous fields.

In medical sciences, researchers from the Republic of Moldova have developed modern platforms for monitoring stroke patients, contributed to the inauguration of the National Center for Epileptology, and advanced studies on cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and respiratory conditions. Modern methods for early diagnosis, personalized therapies, and minimally invasive surgical techniques have been developed, aimed at improving the prognosis and quality of life for patients.

In agriculture, biology, and the environment, research has demonstrated the importance of sustainable agriculture and adaptation to climate change. New high-performing varieties of wheat, barley, tomatoes, and sunflowers have been created, thousands of valuable genotypes have been selected, and modern technologies for irrigation, fertilization, and soil protection have been developed. Significant progress has also been made in viticulture, animal husbandry, and food biotechnology, including through the development of innovative plant protein-based products and modern processing technologies.

In the field of mathematics and computer science, researchers have developed new algorithms for decision intelligence and data analysis in medicine and finance, as well as applications for education and the digitization of Romanian cultural heritage. At the same time, digital platforms and tools have been created for leveraging historical documents and supporting modern education.

In chemistry and nanotechnology, scientists have synthesized new compounds with antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antifungal potential and have developed materials applicable in water purification and pollutant removal.

Research in physics and materials science has focused on ultrafast lasers, materials for high-performance LEDs, structures with superconducting properties, and state-of-the-art optoelectronic technologies. In parallel, hybrid materials and technologies have been developed for sensors, smart devices, and nanometric structures.

An important emphasis was also placed on energy. Specialists have developed models for the modernization of the heating system in Chișinău, the integration of renewable energy sources, and the reduction of CO₂ emissions. Additionally, hybrid systems have been developed capable of reducing energy costs and contributing to increasing the country’s energy security.

In engineering and space technologies, researchers have developed prototypes for nanosatellites, drones, and intelligent systems for data capture and transmission, including platforms for monitoring air pollution.

The document also highlights significant contributions in geology and seismology. Research indicates the existence of potential hydrocarbon deposits in the southern part of the Republic of Moldova, and scientists have developed models for assessing seismic risk and for underground gas storage.

In the social, economic, and educational sciences, researchers have analyzed the demographic and economic transformations of the country, the impact of European integration, and have proposed solutions for the modernization of public administration and social systems. At the same time, digital pedagogy models, tools to combat misinformation, and interactive educational resources have been developed.

A separate chapter is dedicated to cultural heritage, history, and archaeology. New archaeological sites have been identified, old texts and documents have been digitized, historical monuments have been researched, and intangible cultural heritage has been valorized, including through the promotion of the UNESCO file dedicated to the traditional cobza.

The report demonstrates that research in the Republic of Moldova generates not only fundamental knowledge but also concrete solutions for issues of major interest: health, energy, education, environment, digitalization, security, and sustainable development.

After hearing the reports, the members of the General Assembly participated in a comprehensive academic dialogue regarding the content of the documents. Proposals were made from a perspective regarding the improvement of scientific activity at the national level, the strengthening of collaboration with public authorities, and the identification of solutions to overcome the problems faced by the scientific community.

Following the discussions, both documents were approved unanimously, with the proposals made during the session being supported, including those regarding the intensification of institutional dialogue with the authorities, especially with the Ministry of Education and Research.

The report on the state of science emphasizes the need for strategic measures, such as the gradual increase of research funding, the development of a National Research and Innovation Strategy, the modernization of scientific infrastructure, and the strengthening of human potential in research. Currently, approximately 3,300 collaborators are active in the field of scientific research, and the decline in the number of young people involved in scientific activity remains a major challenge.

The approved documents underline the essential role of science and innovation in the development of the Republic of Moldova and the need to consolidate a competitive research system, integrated into the European knowledge area, capable of transforming scientific results into tangible benefits for society and the economy.
