CHISINAU, July 27, 2026 — The working visit conducted by the President of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (ASM), Acad. Ion Tighineanu, to Wuhan University of Technology (WUT), China, between July 15–23, 2026, marks a new milestone in strengthening bilateral and international academic relations. The initiative yielded concrete agreements on establishing joint research infrastructure and culminated in the conferral of a prestigious academic distinction upon the head of the ASM.
A Higher Stage in Moldovan-Chinese Scientific Cooperation
Marking his third visit to WUT — following participation in major international conferences in November 2024 and January 2026 aimed at identifying shared scientific interests —, this summer’s engagement transitioned bilateral efforts from exploratory dialogue to long-term strategic projects.
Following discussions with WUT leadership, key priority directions were established:
- Joint International Laboratory: A dedicated collaborative platform will be established to execute high-level multidisciplinary research projects, leveraging the expertise of both scientific communities.
- Global Scientific Events: Both parties agreed to organize joint international conferences open to scholars worldwide, promoting broader international scientific dialogue.
- Young Researcher Exchange Programs: Plans were initiated to host joint Moldovan-Chinese summer and autumn schools for students. This builds upon an established tradition: Prof. Xiao-Yu Yang, representing the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Technology for Materials Synthesis and Processing at WUT, recently served as a lecturer at the “Path to Scientific Discoveries” Summer School, organized by ASM and the Young Academy of Moldova in partnership with the Romanian Academy.
During his stay in Wuhan, Acad. Ion Tighineanu also delivered a series of lectures to students and early-career researchers at the host university.
International Academic Recognition
On July 22, 2026, during a dedicated official ceremony, Acad. Ion Tighineanu was awarded the title of Honorary Professor of Wuhan University of Technology.
This honor underscores the global standing of the ASM President — a member of Academia Europaea and the International Science Council. It joins other prestigious international accolades, including the title of Honorary Professor of Shizuoka University, Japan, conferred upon him in 2017.
A Model for Academic Coexistence and Dialogue
The outcomes of this visit reaffirm that open dialogue, international collaboration, and the continuous exchange of knowledge are fundamental pillars of genuine scientific progress. By building new bridges between the academic communities of Moldova and China, the Academy of Sciences of Moldova reinforces its commitment to advancing excellence and integrating national research into global networks.
