The International Science Council (ISC) is launching the high-level international initiative “Appeal for Science,” a strategic endeavor designed to mobilize the global scientific community, public authorities, the business sector, and civil society in affirming the vital role of science in supporting sustainable development, peace, and societal well-being.

This initiative originated from the meeting held in Chișinău on April 16, 2026, between the leadership of the International Science Council and representatives of the scientific community from the Romanian-speaking region, resulting in an open letter addressed to the international community. The document was prepared under the auspices of the International Science Council, with the direct contributions of the leaderships of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova and the Romanian Academy, and benefits from the institutional support of the ISC, which will promote the Appeal through its global network of members, partners, and experts.

The Appeal, discussed during the roundtable titled “Science Unites: Dialogue for the Future in a Changing World,” stems from the reality that the world is traversing a period marked by profound geopolitical transformations, multiple and interdependent crises, accelerated technological shifts, growing environmental and health pressures, as well as the spread of disinformation and mistrust in validated knowledge. In this context, the initiators emphasize that science must be better integrated into public life, uphold the highest ethical standards, and serve as a stronger voice in guiding decisions that shape the future of society.

The document highlights that the major challenges of the 21st century—climate change, global health, food and energy security, digital transformation, the development of artificial intelligence, and emerging geopolitical vulnerabilities—can only be overcome through international cooperation, open dialogue, and the application of scientific knowledge. At the same time, the Appeal draws attention to the fact that investments in research, education, and innovation represent an indispensable prerequisite for resilience, prosperity, and social peace. Furthermore, the document advocates for strengthening science communication, bringing science closer to society and young people, and countering disinformation by fostering a culture of respect for knowledge.

The authors of the Appeal solemnly call upon scientists, academic institutions, decision-makers, the business community, and civil society to act together to reinforce the role of science as a global public good, reaffirming that a sustainable future cannot be built without robust research, education, and strong academic institutions.

Starting in July 2026, the Appeal is available on the dedicated platform www.appealforscience.com, where researchers worldwide are invited to express their support by signing the document. Between August and October 2026, the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, the Romanian Academy, and the International Science Council will conduct an extensive international promotional campaign targeting the scientific community, governments, international organizations, the business sector, and civil society. Additionally, prominent organizations and figures in the scientific world, including representatives of the Nobel Foundation and other prestigious institutions, will be contacted.

The campaign will culminate on November 10, 2026, on the occasion of World Science Day for Peace and Development, with communication actions and a dedicated event aimed at the international promotion of the Appeal’s message. Subsequently, the institutional partners will evaluate the campaign’s impact and leverage the experience gained to develop new initiatives for the advancement of science.
