US, Denmark and Greenland Sign Historic Security Pact

The leaders of the United States, Denmark, and Greenland have officially signed a new security agreement of major importance (the signing took place on September 22, 2026, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York). Here are the main points of this historic agreement:

No change in sovereignty:

Although American President Donald Trump had previously insisted on controlling or purchasing the territory, the agreement does not transfer sovereignty. Greenland remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark, respecting the territorial integrity and the right to self-determination of the Greenlandic people.

Expansion of the American military presence: The treaty gives the United States extensive and permanent rights for military access and stationing, including plans for building new bases (such as in the Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig areas) and integrating the territory into the missile defense system (‘Golden Dome’).
