| The British Academy, in partnership with Fundaรงรฃo Getulio Vargas (FGV), will host in Brazil a Knowledge Frontiers Symposium bringing together early-career researchers and policymakers from across the world. The symposium is part of a series the British Academy organises and also related to the Academyโs Global (Dis)Order international policyโฏprogramme, a collaboration with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. The symposium starts from the premise that the study and practice of international order is undergoing significant change. Great power competition has returned to the centre of international politics; international norms and law face deep transformation; global capitalism is being reorganised through geopolitical and technological competition; climate change increasingly structures political choices; and established forms of institutionalised cooperation coexist with new forms of fragmentation. The symposium will take place in Mangaratiba, Brazil, from 21-22 January 2027. The costs of travel, visas and accommodation for participants will be covered. Participants should attend the entire symposium programme and be available to travel on transport options chosen by the British Academy. Aims The symposium will bring together around forty early career researchers (understood as up to ten years after obtaining a PhD) and early career policymakers from across the globe. The symposium is designed specifically to encourage collaboration and networking. In order to incentivise long-term collaboration and networking, seed funding will be made available for which participants can apply for on a competitive basis. In addition to funding a number of collaborative proposals, the symposium will aim to provide opportunities for a range of other outputs. Participants, for example, could be invited to contribute to a publication focused on the symposium theme, either through individual papers or in partnership with other symposium participants, record audio outputs or write blog posts that will be compiled into a series dedicated to the symposium. Further information about such opportunities will be provided at the symposium. Scope of the call For applicants, we intend to focus the discussions at the symposium on a series of thematic issues, including the below, and expect applications to attend to engage with one or more of these areas in demonstrating their interest and/or experience related to global (dis)order. Sovereignty and Nationalism Economic and Ecological Interdependence Regions and Regionalism Hierarchy and Empire Religion Justice Responding to the call Applicants should provide: ย A completed application form. ย Applications must be submitted online using the British Academy’s Grant Management System (GMS), Flexi-Grantยฎ .ย The deadline for submissions is Wednesday 4 November 2026 at 17:00 (GMT) We will seek to notify successful applicants by the end of November.
