Ladies and gentlemen,
Distinguished members of the academic community,
Esteemed professors, researchers, and legal practitioners,
Dear guests,
It is a distinct honor and a genuine joy to be with you today at the National Conference on the Philosophy of Law—an excellent opportunity not only for consistent academic debate, but also for a shared reflection on the moral and conceptual foundations of law.
I extend my cordial greetings and, at the same time, the message of the Academy of Legal Sciences of Romania, an institution I have the honor to represent, which assumes with responsibility the mission of contributing to the development of legal sciences, the consolidation of legal culture, and the affirmation of the values that confer legitimacy upon the act of justice.
For all of us who dedicate ourselves to the research, interpretation, and application of law, it is essential not to reduce the legal norm to a mere text of law or to an institutional mechanism. Behind every rule lies a conception of man, of freedom, and of social order. From this perspective, the philosophy of law is not a secondary concern, but the fundamental framework in which law analyzes its principles and justifies its legitimacy.
I warmly congratulate the Romanian Association for the Philosophy of Law on organizing this conference and on marking 35 years of activity. This anniversary goes beyond the significance of a mere chronological milestone; it bears witness to an admirable intellectual continuity, the perseverance of an academic community, and the conviction that law, in order to truly fulfill its social mission, must not only be known and applied, but also constantly questioned regarding its grounds, the values it enshrines, and the consequences it generates in society.
The philosophy of law is therefore not a theoretical exercise detached from reality. It is simply the space where we pause from our daily routine to ask ourselves essential questions: Why do we have this rule? Is it just? Does it fulfill its purpose?
Law certainly needs the precision of the norm, the coherence of the system, and the predictability of its application, but it equally needs discernment, critical spirit, and a permanent connection to the values that justify its existence. Without reflection and without a critical perspective, the law risks becoming a mere formal mechanism, applied mechanically.
And this need for reflection is perhaps more visible today than ever before, as we speak more and more about digitalization, algorithms, and artificial intelligence. Technology offers us speed and efficiency, but it also confronts us with delicate questions: Who is responsible for a decision? How do we maintain human control? How do we ensure that an algorithm does not sacrifice fairness in the name of speed?
This is why the philosophy of law remains so relevant. It reminds us that not everything that is technically possible is also correct or just, and efficiency cannot replace respect for man and his dignity.
I am also glad that the Academy of Legal Sciences of Romania is a partner in this scientific event. We consider that the proximity between the academic environment, the research community, and the legal professions is essential for the development of a solid legal culture and for an adequate response to the challenges of contemporary society. The complexity of these challenges requires overcoming disciplinary boundaries and cultivating an authentic dialogue, in which the experience of legal practice, the rigor of scientific research, and the depth of philosophical reflection complement and reinforce one another.
At the same time, the philosophical-legal community has a special responsibility: to keep alive the dialogue between generations, to encourage original research, and to support an academic environment where ideas can be examined freely, with rigor, and without prejudice. Only through such a dialogue can we contribute to clarifying the fundamental concepts of law, deepening its values, and developing perspectives capable of addressing the problems of the present without losing sight of its permanent demands.
On behalf of the Academy of Legal Sciences of Romania, I reaffirm our commitment to supporting interdisciplinary dialogue, high-standard research, and academic initiatives that contribute to the consolidation of Romanian legal culture.
I wish you consistent debates, fertile dialogues, and ideas capable of becoming benchmarks for legal research and practice. May this meeting reaffirm our conviction that law achieves its true measure not only through the order it establishes, but, above all, through the justice it pursues, the freedom it protects, and the human dignity it is called upon to guarantee.
Thank you!
