The latest advances in the diagnosis and treatment of heart arrhythmias, modern interventional technologies, and the future directions of cardiology were the main topics of the Congress of the Society of Cardiologists of the Republic of Moldova, held under the theme “Heart Rhythm – Moldova 2026,” on October 30, 2026, in the Azure Hall of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (ASM). The international scientific event brought together cardiologists, researchers, university professors, and experts from Moldova, Romania, Germany, Hungary, Ukraine, Armenia, and Austria, providing a great setting for professional dialogue and the exchange of experiences on contemporary approaches to preventing, diagnosing, and treating heart rhythm disorders.

The Congress sessions were opened by academician Mihail Popovici, a doctor habilitated in medical sciences, university professor, and president of the Society of Cardiologists of the Republic of Moldova, who highlighted the importance of scientific advances in the field of arrhythmology and the need to integrate them into medical practice. The academician emphasized that atrial fibrillation and other cardiac rhythm disorders represent complex challenges for contemporary medicine, requiring an interdisciplinary approach and effective collaboration between cardiologists, family doctors, and electrophysiology specialists. Referring to the scientific program of the meeting, academician Mihail Popovici noted that it was designed to link the understanding of the mechanisms of arrhythmia onset and development with the identification of the most effective therapeutic strategies.

At the same time, he emphasized that the development of electrophysiology and interventional treatment in the Republic of Moldova opens new opportunities for patients, but taking advantage of these opportunities requires the continuous improvement of medical staff and strengthening collaboration with specialized centers.

In his welcoming message, the President of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, academician Ion Tighineanu, praised the organization of the Congress and the relevance of the topics addressed, highlighting the importance of using scientific research results in developing modern therapeutic solutions with direct benefits for patients. The President of ASM noted that the progress made in cardiology, from understanding the mechanisms of atrial fibrillation to developing advanced ablation, cardiac pacing, and sudden cardiac death prevention technologies, demonstrates the essential role of integrating fundamental research, innovative technologies, and clinical experience.

Academician Ion Tighineanu highlighted the complexity of the electrical, biochemical, and mechanical mechanisms that ensure the coordinated functioning of the heart, mentioning that understanding these mechanisms and the disturbances that lead to arrhythmias is one of the major challenges in contemporary medicine. In this context, he emphasized that the true value of scientific progress is measured by lives saved, suffering relieved, and the improvement of people’s quality of life.

A special moment in the opening ceremony was dedicated to Academician Mihail Popovici, president of the Society of Cardiologists of the Republic of Moldova, who turned 84 on October 29. On this occasion, the president of ASM extended congratulations and paid tribute to his scientific and professional activity, highlighting his remarkable contributions to the development of modern cardiology and the national system of specialized cardiac care.
