Happy International Women’s Day 2016!

8 March marks International Women’s Day with thousands of events occurring worldwide to celebrate the social, cultural, political and economic achievements of women. This year, the UN theme of International Women’s Day is Pledge for Parity.

Following the December 2015 call for applications for membership to the 3 EC3 Advisory Groups, a thorough assessment of the applications was conducted.

For the Advisory Group on Financial Services, the following persons were selected for an initial term of 2 years, starting on 1 March 2016:

EC3 seizes the opportunity to congratulate and welcome these new members and to thank all who expressed an interest.

For the last group (Advisory Group on Telecom and Internet Service Providers), the decision on its composition is still pending. This is due to the low number of applications received. We will seek to find a solution as soon as possible in consultation with all involved partners and apologise for any inconvenience caused by the prolonged duration of the decision process.

Europe-wide action targets money mule schemes

1 March 2016

From 22 to 26 February 2016, law enforcement agencies and judicial bodies from Belgium, Denmark, Greece, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Romania, Spain and Portugal – with further support from Moldova and other countries – joined forces in the first coordinated European action against money muling. The operation was also supported by Europol, Eurojust and the European Banking Federation (EBF).

Europol supports Europe-wide crackdown on cocaine-trafficking Balkan Organised Crime Group

1 March 2016

The Croatian Police in cooperation with its respective counterparts in Austria, Germany and the Netherlands and with the support of Europol have arrested 13 suspects belonging to a Balkan Organised Crime Group responsible for importing large amounts of cocaine from South America to Europe through the Netherlands.

The investigation, known as Operation DANUBE, lasted several months and allowed investigators to locate the stash-house where two Croatian citizens residing in the Netherlands hid the substance.

Workshop in Colombia on Europol Malware Analysis Solution

The Europol Malware Analysis Solution (EMAS) was promoted during a workshop organised at the Colombian Police headquarters on 24 – 25 February 2016. The main purpose of the workshop was to present this malware analysis solution to the 35 representatives from law enforcement, CERTs1 and private sector from Colombia and others countries of the AMERIPOL community.

Europol and INTERPOL take steps against organised crime behind migrant smuggling

The 2nd Europol and INTERPOL Operational Forum on Countering Migrant Smuggling Networks, held at Europol’s headquarters in The Hague on 22 and 23 February, outlined important measures against the organised criminal networks behind people smuggling.

Europol launches the European Migrant Smuggling Centre

22 February 2016

Today Europol launched the new European Migrant Smuggling Centre (EMSC). The goal of the Centre is to proactively support EU Member States in dismantling criminal networks involved in organised migrant smuggling. The Centre will focus on geographical criminal hotspots, and will build a better capability across the European Union to fight people smuggling networks.
