European members of the International Scientific Council convened in Stockholm

On 21-22 November 2024, the annual meeting of the European members of the International Scientific Council (ISC) took place in Stockholm, Sweden. The event was organised by the Estonian Academy of Sciences, as coordinator of the ISC European Members’ Section and was hosted by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

During the meeting, the role of the Academies in promoting excellence in research and supporting governments and society in overcoming crisis and uncertainty situations was reiterated, thus addressing several aspects regarding the development of science at European and international level. The main topics, discussed at the meeting of the European members of the ISC, were aimed at both assessing the global priorities of the International Scientific Council and identifying key aspects in the development of science taking into account current global challenges. The discussions focused on three main themes: Artificial Intelligence; The support of the Academies in the promotion of evidence-based policies and the manifesto “Reclaiming Europe”.

The Academy of Sciences of Moldova was represented at the meeting by the President of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, Acad. Ion Tighineanu, member of the International Scientific Council and Dr. Tudor Braniște, Head of the Academic Management and External Relations Section of the Academy of Moldova, President of the Youth Academy of Moldova.

The discussions on artificial intelligence, the prospects and risks it entails, as well as the regulation of its use, were elucidated by Professor Amos Storkey from the University of Edinburgh, UK. The issue of artificial intelligence in science is complex and encompasses several important aspects, including ethics and transparency, process automation, human-machine collaboration, etc. At the same time, it is also necessary to consider the possibilities of artificial intelligence to quickly analyze very large volumes of data, which brings a benefit to scientific research.
