Acad. Ion Tighineanu, president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, participated online in the quarterly meeting of the International Science Council (ISC). During the meeting, ISC President Prof. Peter Gluckman and Dr. Salvatore Arico, ISC Executive Director, provided updated information on recent developments and upcoming events.
There was talk about the role of researchers and trust in science and scientific institutions, about freedom and responsibilities in the field of scientific research, as well as about the importance of international collaboration. Prof. Gluckman informed the audience about the ISC Meeting and the Science Dialogue entitled ‘Science in a Complex World – Science for a Better Future,’ which will take place in Beijing, China, from October 19-24, 2026, encouraging ISC members to contribute relevant proposals to the development of the agenda.
Regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI), it was mentioned that AI infrastructure must truly serve the public interest, but to achieve this goal it must be governed transparently and democratically, not just as a resource managed by technical experts.
In his intervention, Acad. Ion Tighineanu, President of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, informed the ISC members about some aspects discussed during the regional conference “The Role of Science in the Modern World – Artificial Intelligence. The Challenge of the 21st Century,” held on November 6 in the Aula of the Romanian Academy in Bucharest and in the Blue Hall of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova in Chișinău. Acad. Tighineanu expressed his gratitude to Prof. Peter Gluckman for speaking at the opening of the event, which was highly appreciated by the participants.
The President of the ASM drew attention to the importance of a thorough investigation of the risks that may arise in the future from the implementation of AI and proposed that the topic of AI be included on the agenda of the scientific forum in Beijing, China, scheduled for October 19-24, 2026.
I will emphasize that by the Decision of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova dated April 14, 2025, for his prodigious collaboration with the academic community of the Republic of Moldova, as a token of gratitude, Prof. Peter Gluckman was awarded the “Dimitrie Cantemir” medal of the ASM.
