The Academy of Sciences of Moldova (ASM) and the Youth Academy of Moldova continue the campaign to promote science among young people across the country. On November 24, a group of 20 students from the Gymnasium in Cetireni, Ungheni district, visited the laboratories of the National Center for Material Study and Testing within the Technical University of Moldova (UTM), whose founder is the president of ASM, Acad. Ion Tighineanu. Guided by researchers Dr. Tudor Braniște and PhD student Cătălin Creciunel, the students became familiar with techniques for obtaining and characterizing nanomaterials and discovered how a scanning electron microscope works, as well as an atomic force microscope. The young people learned details about microelectronics and the processes underlying chip manufacturing.
At the same time, they had the opportunity to see how a 3D printer works, as well as to observe systems for characterizing scientific samples at very low temperatures, and LASER light sources used in scientific research.
During the discussions, the students expressed their interest in university study programs, being curious to learn both the admission requirements and the level of preparation they should achieve before entering university.
This year, the campaign to promote science in schools was supported by UNESCO through the program ‘Promotion and popularization of science and scientific research in pre-university educational institutions of the Republic of Moldova to expand knowledge in the interests of sustainable development.’ It is carried out throughout 2025, including a variety of educational activities, such as: public lectures given by researchers, guided visits to research centers and university laboratories, as well as the organization of the Summer School ‘The Path to Scientific Discoveries,’ which was held at the ASM from June 23-27, 2025.
